Marine sentenced to eight years in prison in Iraqi’s death

first_imgPennington, 22, of Mukilteo, Wash., pleaded guilty Tuesday to kidnapping and conspiracy. Murder, larceny and housebreaking charges that will be dismissed if he completes terms of a plea bargain requiring him to testify for the government and remain on good behavior. “I’m sad because he’s a fine young Marine scarred from his experiences in Fallujah,” said his civilian attorney, David Brahms. Brahms said he will try to have the sentence commuted. Pennington was part of an eight-member squad accused of kidnapping and murdering Hashim Ibrahim Awad, 52, last April in the Iraqi town of Hamdania. Investigators said the Marines dragged Awad from his home, shot him, and then planted an AK-47 and a shovel by his body to make it look like he was an insurgent planting a bomb. CAMP PENDLETON – A Marine who apologized for the kidnap and murder of an Iraqi man by his squad was sentenced to eight years in military prison on Saturday. Lance Cpl. Robert B. Pennington, 22, showed no emotion as he was handed the longest sentence yet in the murder investigation despite claiming he never fired a shot. A military judge gave him 14 years but suspended six years of the sentence under terms of a pretrial agreement. He also credited Pennington with 340 days of prison time already served. Pennington also was reduced in rank and given a dishonorable discharge during sentencing at the Camp Pendleton Marine base. The sentence will be automatically reviewed by a military appeals court. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations!
