Spotify launches its own app platform

Spotify launches its own app platform

first_imgLast week we were told that a Spotify event would be held today. The invitations teased of a new direction for the company, and some speculated that it would add an MP3 store. The event has come and gone, and there is no store; instead the company announced the opening of its platform to third-party apps. The Spotify API will be open to developers, who can integrate HTML5 apps with the music streaming service. The new Spotify desktop client will add a marketplace, App Finder, to the left sidebar. At launch, the company has lined up deals with Rolling Stone, Billboard, last.fm, Pitchfork, and The Guardian. Each app will integrate with Spotify’s library to add informational content. The Rolling Stone app, for example, lets you play a full song or album while reading its review. The TuneWiki app displays lyrics. Last.fm connects saved history and favorites from its stations with Spotify’s library. MoodAgent lets you find playlists that correspond to your mood, be it happy, angry, or sensual (expect loads of Marvin Gaye there). In addition to supporting third-party apps, Spotify will also be adding a social feature to its own desktop app. It bears a resemblance to Facebook’s ticker, and will tell you what your friends — and designated close friends — are listening to.If you expected Spotify app support to mean that standalone mobile and desktop apps will integrate with the service, think again. There are no separate third party apps: all are tied to the streaming service’s desktop software. There is also no support for mobile apps. Rather than adding itself to established third-party applications, Spotify is creating its own closed ecosystem.Beta versions of the first Spotify apps will launch today.
