first_imgLetterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) Department of Computing is delighted to announce the return of their Computing Summer Camps 2018.Back by popular demand the camps begin on Tuesday 5 June. LYIT will host three weeks of Computing Summer Camps at the Letterkenny campus and due to demand two camps, each week, will take place. The camps are open to ages 13-17 years and the camps will cover a variety of topics including App Inventor, Computer Games Development, Networking and Swift Playgrounds. These camps aim to improve the skills and knowledge of secondary school students in the field of Computing and are open to beginners, keen to learn more about the Computing discipline. The first week of the Computing Summer Camps, will be a ‘Girls Only’ camp focusing on developing the interest of girls in Computing.Currently, there is a worldwide shortage of women working in the Computing Industry and it is hoped that events such as the ‘Girls Only’ Computing Camp will spark the interest and passion of girls in this area. The cost to participate in the camp is only €20 per week (camp lengths vary) and lunch will be provided daily as part of the camp cost.Thomas Dowling, Head of Department of Computing, commented, “Currently in its fourth year, the LYIT Computing Summer Camps have provided participants with an introduction into disciplines such as programming, networking and games development. This year, LYIT will be holding three weeks of Computing Summer Camps, and we have also introduced a ‘Girls Only’ camp to support efforts by the Department of Education to encourage more girls into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields. The camp cost is only €20 per week, which includes a lunch, and it is hoped that events such as this will support the ever increasing demand for Computing graduates.Currently there are multiple job vacancies for every one IT graduate in Ireland, and the aim of events such as LYIT Computing Summer Camps is to encourage prospective students to choose Computing in the future. The camps promise to be fun, interactive and engaging, and if you are a student interested in IT, or a parent of a teenager interested in this discipline, then why not book a place on one of the camps this summer.”Students will receive a ‘Certificate of Participation’ following completion of the course.
