first_imgA new Mash prize has been launched in memory of late costume designer Neil Chan. The announcement was made last week by Director of Culture Tamika Boatswain, who announced the inclusion of the ‘Neil Chan Prize for Creativity and Pageantry’ as part of this year’s Mashramani activities.The prize was donated by former costume designer and Neil Chan’s widow, Mrs. Sheila Chan. The trophy will be donated yearly for the King of the Band competition.Neil Chan was most popular in the 70s and 80s; he dominated the Mashramani competitions with brilliant and thoughtful pieces. On numerous occasions, Chan won the King of the Band competition; he also spearheaded the Solo Sounds Band which was said to be the leading private sector costume band at that time.Chan is also the recipient of Guyana’s highest accolade, The Golden Arrowhead of Achievement award, for his outstanding contributions to Guyana’s Culture. He was also honoured with the GCA of New York Award, also for his contributions to Guyana’s arts and culture. Chan passed away on January 5 of this year, he was 88 years old.The Neil Chand Foundation has also stated that it is looking forward to collaborating with the Department of Culture to develop the Festival Arts in the nation. It plans on doing so by providing training for young and upcoming designers so that they can improve the standard of their work.last_img read more
