first_imgThe 8th of May Movement of the East Coast Demerara community of Beterverwagting/ Triumph had the golden opportunity of meeting with President David Granger on Wednesday, September 12, to discuss its work and development plans.Movement Chairperson Latecia Stuart outlined to the President the Movement’s strategic development plan, which has four main pillars: the family, church, school and farm, and said the plan was developed in keeping with the President’s vision for the sustainability and advancement of each community.She explained that there also is intention to place specific emphasis on sport,President Grander being flanked by the 8th of May Movement delegation. From (L-R) Oscar Glasgow, Dikemma Utoh, Latecia Stuart (Chairperson), Deborah Shortt-Parker, Reinsford Benfield and Elton Mc Raesmart agricultural practices, and agro-processing.In response, President Granger praised the Movement’s work in the area of sport, and encouraged them to continue placing more emphasis on this discipline, noting that sport is a strong unifying force.The President’s comments were mainly in reference to the recently concluded inaugural BV/Triumph 8th of May Movement Emancipation Cohesion Football League, which saw three teenagers receiving academic/vocational awards for outstanding performances on the football pitch. The awards are valued at $180,000 each, and are for the period September, 2018 to August, 2019. These academic/vocational awards are being sponsored by the Restoration Opportunities through Christ (ROC), and are aimed at assisting their recipients in specified areas relative to their academic and vocational advancement. The awards are valued at $15, 000 monthly for the identified year.Two award recipients, Ian Dooker and Omari Glasgow, have already started to benefit from this sponsorship; while the third recipient, Trevon Adams, would soon benefit from his.As the audience with the Head of State concluded, Stuart thanked President Granger for his continued support extended to the Movement and the work that has been undertaken by it.last_img read more
