How Bad Was the Cabrera Deal

The big news coming out of baseball Thursday night was that Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera had been re-signed to a 10-year, $292 million contract extension, the most expensive deal in the history of the sport. On the surface, the pact seems like lunacy on the part of the team’s general manager, Dave Dombrowski.Cabrera has been the best hitter in baseball over the past nine years. Over the last four seasons, he won two American League Most Valuable Player Awards and three AL batting titles. But his gaudy offensive statistics overstate his value: He is a below-average fielder and baserunner. More important, Cabrera will turn 31 in April, meaning the Tigers will be paying him through age 40. Players are typically in decline by the time they hit their early 30s.Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA projection system expects Cabrera to generate about 35 more wins above replacement over the remainder of the contract (after rescaling BP’s value metric to the lower replacement level used more commonly by Baseball-Reference and Fangraphs). If the market rate for a single WAR was $6.5 million in 2014 (I split difference between this estimate and this estimate), and we add 5 percent in annual inflation to the cost of a win, Cabrera’s next 10 years will be worth about $275 million. By this rough math, the Tigers appear to have overpaid by something like $15 million to $20 million. It’s also worth noting that Detroit already had Cabrera locked up through 2015 under his existing contract. The $234 million it’s paying him beyond that season will deliver just $204 million in value, according to PECOTA.However, Dombrowski probably isn’t worried about the high likelihood that Cabrera will be overpaid (and vastly so) throughout the back half of this contract. Instead, he presumably put a premium on locking up the remaining prime seasons of one of the best hitters in baseball history. The Tigers were two wins away from a World Series berth last season with one of the AL’s oldest lineups, so the case can be made that the Tigers are discounting the long-term burdens of Cabrera’s huge contract in exchange for elite performance in the short-to-intermediate term.Indeed, before we lump this deal in with other onerous contracts, such as the ones handed to Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols, I’d like to look into modeling those deals against the players’ expected WAR. But for now, it appears the Tigers paid a huge premium for the tail end of Cabrera’s prime, banking on him remaining an MVP-caliber player into his mid-30s. read more

HC dissatisfied with city corporations measures for fighting dengue

first_imgHigh courtThe High Court on Sunday expressed dissatisfaction over measures taken by the two city corporations of capital Dhaka to prevent Dengue menace.A bench of justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and KM Quamrul Kader expressed the view during the hearing of a suo moto case after the government prosecutors presented a progress report on the measures taken by the authority to prevent dengue. The court said responsible people of two city corporations did not take preventive measures in time. If steps had been taken, the current situation would have been prevented.People who were on duty to monitor the situation did not perform their duties properly. They lack proper temperament and skills, added the court.Deputy attorney general ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar and assistant attorney general Saiful Alam represented the state.During the hearing, the court asked the state counsels about differing kinds of statements regarding the number of people who died of dengue.ABM Abdullah replied saying according to the government 48 people died of dengue. People who died of dengue so far might have some other diseases. Some may suffer heart attack, he offered as an example. So it is a matter of scrutiny, he contended on behalf of the state. In response, the court said dengue is now spreading across the country. If the preventive measures were taken in due time, so many people would not have died.About medicine (insecticide), the court said the same medicine is being sprayed year after year without any test. Now the medicine is not working. Repeated use of a medicine made the mosquitoes develop tolerance, which has to be understood, the court said. However, while presenting the progress report, the DAG said the government has been very sincere to prevent dengue outbreak. Vacations were cancelled in all government hospitals. Customs duty has been exempted for importing medicine from abroad. Three surveillance teams have been formed. Hospitals that disobey government directives have been fined through mobile courts. Mobile courts were conducted in a total of 40 hospitals. The drive will continue. The court concluded without giving any ruling on the matter.last_img read more

Stranger Things 3 Is a Subscriber Magnet 13 of ExNetflix Users Signing

first_imgNetflix can’t be happy about the looming departures of “Friends” (for WarnerMedia’s newly announced HBO Max in 2020) and “The Office” (for NBCUniversal’s service in 2021) — the platform’s top two most-streamed shows in the U.S. for 2018, according to Nielsen. But for years, Netflix has anticipated that media conglomerates would pull back their top titles, and the company has been more focused than ever on spending to build up a prominent slate of originals to attract and retain subscribers. On this front, one of Netflix’s successes is clearly “Stranger Things,” the ’80s-era supernatural thriller from Matt and Ross Duffer that has become a major franchise for the subscription VOD leader. On Monday, Netflix thumped its chest over “Stranger Things 3,” boasting in a tweet that 40.7 million accounts have watched the show since its July 4 debut, the biggest-ever audience on the streaming service for any film or TV series in its first four days. Popular on Variety What’s Coming to Netflix in September 2019 But you don’t have to take Netflix’s word for it that “Stranger Things” Season 3 is a hit (and many observers question the company’s selectively doled-out stats, which aren’t independently verified).According to research from Wall Street firm Cowen & Co., about 51% of current Netflix users said they planned to watch “Stranger Things 3.” Moreover, nearly 5% of consumers who aren’t current Netflix subscribers said they planned to subscribe to the service to watch the show — and 13% of former Netflix members said they plan to resubscribe in order to watch Season 3 of “Stranger Things.” The results are based on Cowen’s survey of 2,500 U.S. consumers conducted from June 26-July 3.“We view these figures as notably positive given the potential to drive gross sub additions both at the end of 2Q19 and into 3Q19 on the back of arguably NFLX’s highest-profile show,” Cowen & Co.’s internet and new media analyst team, led by John Blackledge, wrote in a research note Tuesday.A few caveats here: People often say on a survey that they intend to do something but then don’t actually follow through, so it’s not known how big a subscriber bump “Stranger Things 3” might actually deliver for Netflix. (The company reports Q2 2019 earnings on July 17.) In addition, Cowen didn’t provide context on how big the response to “Stranger Things” is compared with other programming on Netflix. That said, other third-party research indicates that “Stranger Things 3” is drawing a big crowd. According to Parrot Analytics, in the U.S., over the four-day period of its initial release (July 4-7), “Stranger Things” registered 3.2 times the “demand expressions” of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” (which concluded its eighth season in May) and more than eight times the next most popular Netflix original (“Black Mirror”).U.S. demand for “Stranger Things 3” surged following the release of the show’s final trailer on June 20, pushing it 27% over the peak demand for Season 2 a week and a half before new episodes were available to stream, according to Parrot Analytics. Note that the research firm tracks relative demand for TV shows based not on actual viewing behavior but using data estimating overall popularity of a title from sources including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and piracy services. Even if we accept that “Stranger Things” is unusually popular among Netflix originals, the next question is: Does Netflix have enough in the pipeline to keep people coming back? It’s a question, by the way, that is routinely asked of other subscription-based services like HBO (i.e., what’s its next big hit after “Game of Thrones”?).Netflix has been boosting spending like crazy, fueled by new debt, to get a broad lineup of original content that cuts across categories and appeals to different audiences. Analysts project Netflix’s content spending, on a cash basis, will hit $15 billion in 2019, up from $12 billion last year.In the third quarter, besides “Stranger Things 3,” Netflix has “Orange Is the New Black” Season 7 and “Ozark” Season 3, Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” as well as comedy specials including those from Aziz Ansari, Whitney Cummings and Katherine Ryan.Per Cowen & Co.’s analysis, Netflix released 689 hours of original content in Q2 2019, up more than 50% from a year prior. It’s hard to keep up with the torrent of new releases from Netflix.Netflix Original Hours of New Content Added per QuarterSources: Netflix.com; Instantwatcher.com; Cowen & Co.So is Netflix fretting the impending loss of “Friends” and “The Office”? Recall that back in 2011, when Starz ended its output deal with Netflix that has brought such titles as “Wall-E” to “The Social Network” to the service, the news drove Netflix’s stock down nearly 9%. You can safely say that Netflix safely weathered that storm.Ultimately, Netflix these days is probably too busy spending money on new projects to worry much over the likes of WarnerMedia and NBCU ending content-licensing deals for old TV shows.center_img Related ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Creator Jenji Kohan and Star Uzo Aduba Bid Farewell ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Wholebody vibration may be as effective as exercise

first_imgWhole-body vibration may be just as effective as regular exercise at combating some of the negative consequences of obesity and diabetes, according to a new study in mice.Whole-body vibration (WBV) consists of a person sitting, standing or lying on a machine with a vibrating platform. When the machine vibrates, it transmits energy to the body, and muscles contract and relax multiple times during each second. Many people find it challenging to exercise regularly and that is contributing to the obesity and diabetes epidemics. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfThese disorders can increase the risk of bone fractures.Physical activity can help to decrease this risk and reduce the negative metabolic effects of each condition.”Our study is the first to show that whole-body vibration may be just as effective as exercise at combating some of the negative consequences of obesity and diabetes,” said Meghan E McGee-Lawrence from Augusta University in the US.”While WBV did not fully address the defects in bone mass of the obese mice in our study, it did increase global bone formation, suggesting longer-term treatments could hold promise for preventing bone loss as well,” said McGee-Lawrence. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveThe researchers examined two groups of 5-week-old male mice. One group consisted of normal mice, while the other group was genetically unresponsive to the hormone leptin, which promotes feelings of fullness after eating.Mice from each group were assigned to sedentary, WBV or treadmill exercise conditions. After a week-long period to grow used to the exercise equipment, the groups of mice began a 12-week exercise programme. The mice in the WBV group underwent 20 minutes of WBV at a frequency of 32 Hz with 0.5g acceleration each day. Mice in the treadmill group walked for 45 minutes daily at a slight incline. For comparison, the third group did not exercise. Mice were weighed weekly during the study. The genetically obese and diabetic mice showed similar metabolic benefits from both WBV and exercising on the treadmill.Obese mice gained less weight after exercise or WBV than obese mice in the sedentary group, although they remained heavier than normal mice. Exercise and WBV also enhanced muscle mass and insulin sensitivity in the genetically obese mice. Although there were no significant effects in the young healthy mice, the low-intensity exercise and WBV protocols were designed for successful completion by obese mice. These findings suggest that WBV may be a useful supplemental therapy to combat metabolic dysfunction in individuals with morbid obesity.”These results are encouraging. However, because our study was conducted in mice, this idea needs to be rigorously tested in humans to see if the results would be applicable to people,” McGee-Lawrence said. The study was published in the journal Endocrinology.last_img read more
