Human trafficking for forced labor or sexual exploitation is a global problem which generates as much as $32 billion (USD) in illegal profits every year, according to the United Nations, and has become the world’s fastest-growing transnational criminal enterprise. Jamaica has been lauded for efforts to combat human trafficking “These powers of the National Rapporteur are consistent with internationally accepted best practice and are parallel to National Rapporteur mechanisms in other jurisdictions.” Jamaica has been lauded for efforts to combat human trafficking The appointment of a National Rapporteur will help Jamaica’s efforts to help victims of human trafficking, especially children and teenagers. “Children and young people today are more exposed to the major problems of a growing population, there can be no future if there is no prevention and action,” said Guillermo Garduño, a security analyst at the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM) in Mexico. “The appointment of this person is positive, she has experience in this regard. ” Jamaica has become the first Caribbean nation to appoint a national coordinator to assist in the battle against human trafficking and exploitation. Consequently, in 2014, the JCF – the island nation’s police force – reported that 27 trafficking victims had been rescued during the previous two years. There were also seven cases before the courts, and another 28 cases under investigation, four of which involved transnational investigations. “In addition, the National Rapporteur will … have the authority to obtain from the relevant authorities, including the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Anti-Trafficking-in-Persons (TIP) Unit in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, any information necessary to carry out her stated duties; to conduct independent examinations/investigations of reports of alleged instances of human trafficking where the need arises; to report on violations, wherever they may occur, of the rights of victims, as well as discrimination, threats or use of violence, harassment, intimidation or reprisals directed at persons exercising these rights; and to provide an analytical overview of the situation in trafficking in an annual report to the Government of Jamaica.” The appointment of a National Rapporteur will help Jamaica’s efforts to help victims of human trafficking, especially children and teenagers. And,They’re Off!

And,They’re Off!

first_imgBy John BurtonMonmouth Park opens May 12 for its 67th seasonOCEANPORT – Those celebrating the start of a new racing season at Monmouth Park acknowledge, it’s been a tough year already.“It’s been quite a challenge,” said Dennis Drazin, the lawyer representing the New Jersey Horsemen’s Association, which will be operating the track.Drazin of Red Bank took the opportunity at a press conference and celebration prior to this week’s opening day to offer a brief overview of the struggle to ensure that the track, now under private sector ownership, would continue to operate.“You don’t know how close we came to shutting down Monmouth Park,” Drazin said.Drazin represents the association, which has control of the track through its management company, Darby Development LLC.The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which operated the track since 1985, had been in negotiations for some time, looking to hammer out a deal with the horsemen’s association that would allow the track’s continued operation. Gov. Chris Christie has said the state should get out of the racetrack business as tracks continued to see attendance dwindle and revenue decline. There had been widespread speculation that the track would close if no deal were struck.Among some of the hurdles that had to be jumped was getting support from the various entities needed to operate the track so plans could move forward, Drazin said. The track has been undergoing some aesthetic renovations in preparations for the season.“We haven’t been able to do all the renovations we wanted to this year,” Drazin said.In the future, he said, there will be a miniature golf course and a boardwalk-like attraction. The association plans to reconsider building a water park attraction. The strategy is to make the racetrack more of a family destination.“All of this is vital for the future,” Drazin said.Among the immediate changes for the season will be to catering and food service. “I don’t want to be critical,” Drazin said. “But we needed a change.”BAM Management, LLC will be responsible for food service this year with executive chef Erik Weatherspool, who gained some notice by winning on The Food Channel show Chopped.“We’re changing a lot of things,” the chef said.Weatherspool worked for about a decade at Joe and Maggie’s Bistro, Long Branch, and owned and operated Bistro 44, in Toms River. “The food will speak for itself,” he said. One of the big questions involves whether other types of gambling will be allowed at racetracks, Drazin said. That won’t likely happen for “five years, at least.”The reason is the Christie administration is working to revitalize the Atlantic City gaming industry, he said.“The future may very well include gambling in the northern part of the state,” but for now, “We need to focus on the revenue stream we have,” Drazin said.“We have to focus on the competitive product we have here at Monmouth Park.”Joseph Irace, Oceanport Borough Council president, who was on hand for the conference and luncheon said, “I think it’s a big positive,” what is going on at the track.“I see more excitement than we’ve seen in the last few years,” Irace said. The track is important for Oceanport, as it contributes about 28 percent of the town’s tax base and is its largest employer. Horse breeding is an important part of the county’s heritage and economy, Irace said.As for the horses, Mike Sedlacek, a trainer and owner of six thoroughbreds from Florida, said he has been spending the last few years running his horses exclusively at Monmouth Park, and living in Howell for the season.“I like Monmouth and was a little nervous,” about its prospects, he said. “Where would I go now?”last_img read more

Eureka alone in first after road win over Del Norte

first_imgCrescent City >> Although it may only count as one game in the standings, the ebb and flow of Thursday’s Big 5 baseball game between the Del Norte Warriors and Eureka Loggers at Del Norte High School seemed as though it was three games in one seven-inning span. When all was said and done, it was the Loggers who took over sole possession of the conference lead, overcoming a Warrior rally in the middle innings to come away with a 13-8 victory.“I looked at the wind when I got here [to Del Norte …last_img

If LeBron is Any Indication, Twitter Sponsored Trends Work

first_imgUpdated: We’ve added a new chart at the bottom of the post. Last month, Twitter started promoting ad keywords in its “trending topics” list. With this system, users are brought to a search results page, where the page is topped by a promoted Tweet. But does it work is the question. The answer seems to be yes. Today the National Basketball Association purchased “LeBron James” as a trending topic. Discussion on Mr. James has increased markedly since then. Since the topic has been purchased it has gone from 500 Tweets per hour to 3,000 and rising. Below you’ll see a chart tracking mentions on Twitter of the terms NBA and LeBron James, before and after the ad placement went into effect. The chart comes from Seattle startup Rowfeeder. Rowfeeder’s Adam Schoenfeld posted it on Twitter this afternoon.Knowing whether the purchase was a wise one will require time. If the purchased topic keeps trending, it may indicate a safe bet for future advertisers. Wolves beat Booker-less Suns

Wolves beat Booker-less Suns

first_imgT.J. Warren — who also had 35 points in the first meeting with the Timberwolves — had 18 points for the Suns, and Phoenix started its six-game trip with its third straight loss.Minnesota built an early 14-point lead before Phoenix’s bench pulled the Suns back into it. James had eight second-quarter points to help spark a 25-15 run that gave the Suns a brief four-point lead before Wiggins got hot with three straight buckets to put the Wolves back in front.BOOKER’S STATUSTriano said he hoped Booker’s status would be day-to-day, but that he still needed to speak with the trainers. “They said if he sat out today it would give him a chance to rest a couple more days, so I’m hoping that means he gets to play.” Before the game, Triano said Booker’s injury occurred Friday night in a home loss to New Orleans.TAJ’S TALLYTaj Gibson had 16 points and a season-high 14 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. He finished 8 of 12 from the floor, matching a career high for made field goals. While most of the attention on Minnesota’s revamped roster has focused on Jimmy Butler, Gibson has emerged as a reliable inside presence. “He adds a lot to the team, the way he plays,” Thibodeau said. “He’s got great quickness, he’s got great feet, but there’s a toughness to him that makes him what we need, too.”TIP-INSSuns: Josh Jackson started in Booker’s place and finished with five points. … The Suns’ bench scored 61 points. The unit entered the game averaging 45.4 points over its previous five games. … Phoenix lost for the first time in four games when shooting 50 percent from the floor. … The Suns went 13 of 26 from 3-point range, one off the team’s season high for 3-pointers made.Timberwolves: The Wolves improved to 12-8 to equal their best 20-game start since the 2005-06 season. … Starting point guard Jeff Teague (sore right Achilles) and reserve forward Nemanja Bjelica (sprained left foot) missed their second-consecutive games. Before the game, Thibodeau said both players were “getting closer, but I’m not sure that they’re there yet.” Bjelica’s injury is the same foot that required surgery to repair a fracture last season, and Thibodeau said the team has consulted with the surgeon. “I think he’s good but we just want to make sure.”UP NEXT Alongside Jimmy Butler with 25 points and Andrew Wiggins with 21, Towns kept the Wolves from another bad loss, this one against a Phoenix team missing top scorer Devin Booker.“Whatever the game plan is offensively, I try to go out there and execute as best as possible,” Towns said. “Whether it is shoot 30-plus shots, or shoot five shots.”FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutThe Wolves probably prefer the former, as long as he shoots the way he did Sunday. But Minnesota started the third quarter with a 22-11 run, and Phoenix couldn’t find an offensive spark to seriously threaten the rest of the way.“He’s one of our best scorers, so it’s a big chunk offensively,” Suns interim coach Jay Triano said about Booker. “But at the same time we shot 50 percent. I thought our movement was pretty good. We shared the basketball, so I’m not disappointed with how we played at the offensive end without him. We weren’t very good defensively.”The Wolves outscored the Suns 66-50 in the paint, and had 32 second-chance points to Phoenix’s 12.ADVERTISEMENT LATEST STORIES Japan ex-PM Nakasone who boosted ties with US dies at 101last_img read more

High octane

first_imgAjeet Bajaj, Managing Director, Snow Leopard AdventuresIt was the summer of 1986 and a moment of truth for me. I had just completed my graduation from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and was at the most significant crossroads of my life. The perplexing question before me was whether I should follow the prime passion of my life and opt for a career in adventure sports or go the more conservative way and get a ‘real’ job.In the 80s, adventure sports in India were still at a nascent stage. Most people here considered adventure sports as nothing more than ‘daredevilry’. There was no well-defined government policy or guidelines for adventure tourism and, in the pre-liberalisation era, adventure sports equipment was extremely hard to come by. Many regions of the Himalayas were not only unsafe for adventure activities but also almost impossible to get to. There was also a lot of red-tape involved for overseas mountaineering expeditions to India, even by the ’80s standards. Even getting contour maps was tough. The scenario has changed drastically since then and Indian adventure tourism is on an upswing. According to industry estimates, domestic adventure tourism is seeing an annual growth of about 30 per cent while inbound adventure tourism to India is increasing by up to eight to 10 per cent annually. Unofficial figures say that we have over one million adventure tourists in India every year.Though adventure tourism has come a long way in the last decade or so, a lot of ground still needs to be covered. Matters like the use of satellite phones by adventure tour operators in the course of their work need to be resolved. Tourism being a state subject, there is need for a national adventure tourism policy that is endorsed by all the states. Some operators in the far-flung regions of the country still have to adhere to national and international benchmarks in safety and adopt the good field practices that are advocated by the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria.India’s topography holds out great prospects for adventure tourismThe Indian adventure travel fraternity, which is a 200-member community, represented by the Adventure Tour Operators’ Association of India, strongly feels that India has the potential of becoming a global hotspot for adventure and ecotourism. The industry is working in close cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism to harness this potential in a sensitive manner and to take Indian adventure tourism quite literally to the summit. At present, there are no tailormade courses for adventure tourism in India. The best course of action for those keen on a career in adventure tourism, in my opinion, would be to finish their graduation and follow it up with an MBA in Tourism Administration from the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management, apart from which there are numerous universities-like the Himachal University, the Kurukshetra University-that offer a Master’s programme in Tourism Administration. While in college it would be equally important to immerse fully into adventure sports. There are a number of clubs, institutions (like the Youth Hostels’ Association of India) and commercial outfitters offering trekking, wildlife activities and river rafting trips and it would be ideal to gain as much experience as possible as well as test your resolve and commitment about getting into adventure tourism. It is also worth looking at the adventure and mountaineering courses offered by Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi; Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling; and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali. These courses are subsidised for Indian nationals and the level of instruction and the overall experience is rated high. The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering in Gulmarg also comes highly recommended for skiing and adventure training. I would like to emphasise the importance of physical fitness here. If you are not physically fit, you could still consider an office job in adventure tourism but definitely not field work. Some North American and New Zealand universities offer allied courses such as Adventure Tourism and Outdoor Recreation and Diploma in Adventure Tourism Management. The ideal way to get going would be with a professional, Government of India, Ministry of Tourism-recognised adventure tour operator. There is need for a rather lengthy apprenticeship in adventure tourism due to concerns of safety and professional guest handling. In terms of emolument, the industry is more passion-driven than moneydriven; although in the present scenario, it is possible to make a decent living in the field.I was extremely fortunate in that I got tremendous support from my parents and family and took a decision to follow my heart. I am passionate about my profession and completely believe in the saying-‘if your hobby and profession are the same, you do not work for a single day. There is no better office than ‘the great outdoors’. I am fortunate to have taken the right decision.Snow Leopard Adventures Pvt Ltd, is India’s first certified adventure travel outfit that organises adventure tours in the Indian Subcontinent.
