49ers exhibition recap: Five questions that went unanswered

first_imgSANTA CLARA – Not all questions got answered through a 49ers exhibition season that came to a rest Thursday night. This goes way beyond any intrigue whether coach Kyle Shanahan could wrap up a 4-0 exhibition slate. Nor did it matter the 49ers suited up only 54 of 90 players to face the Los Angeles Chargers, who rallied for a 27-24 win. Here are lingering questions as the 49ers shift their attention to Saturday’s 53-man roster deadline (1 p.m.) and their Sept. 8 regular-season opener at Tampa …last_img

We need the same level of concentration that we had in Leipzig!” he told the club’s official website.“While it’s true that Hannover lost their last match, I’ve seen a few games of theirs in which they’ve played really well.”“For example, they drew 1-1 in Freiburg and had far more goal-scoring opportunities than their opponents,” he explained.“This was against a Freiburg side that had just come off the back of 3-0 and 2-0 wins against Leipzig and Gladbach respectively. That tells you all you need to know.”Jadon SanchoMerson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. He’s been running during the week – the ball hasn’t been involved just yet, but he’s done a few sprints,” the manager said about Zagadou.“It’s a good situation which we’re really happy with. He’ll get there step by step, but Saturday will come too soon.”And the coach took the opportunity to update about injured Marco Reus.“He’s trained all week. He’s doing well. Glass review M Night Shyamalans superheroes arent what you expect

first_img TV and Movies Tags 2019 movies to geek out over Culture: Your hub for everything from film and television to music, comics, toys and sports.Movie Magic: The secrets behind the scenes of your favorite films and filmmakers.  Share your voice 1center_img 77 Photos Comment You know what to expect from a superhero movie, right? Punching. Colorful costumes. Skyscrapers crumbling. More punching. Not if M. Night Shyamalan has anything to say about it.To say the storyline of Shyamalan’s superhero team-up Glass is unexpected would be an understatement. It’s less like a square-jawed superhero and more like Kevin Wendall Crumb, the villain with multiple personalities introduced in another Shyamalan offering, Split. It’s fragmented, contradictory, frustrating and wildly unpredictable. Like many horror fans, I love to follow a writer’s logic and guess what’s going to happen next. Through years of watching movies, I’m usually not far off. But I was taken by surprise when I watched Glass, open in theaters worldwide now. Enlarge ImageSamuel L. Jackson is Mr. Glass. Jessica Kourkounis/Universal Pictures Glass is a sequel to both Split and Shyamalan’s 2000 movie Unbreakable. Twenty years ago, we were introduced to David Dunn, played by Bruce Willis, who was the lone survivor of a devastating train crash. A kooky comics fan played by Samuel Jackson tried to convince Dunn he had superpowers, but in the final moments of the movie, Dunn realized the man who called himself Mr. Glass also fancied himself as a comic book character: a supervillain. In Split, James McAvoy introduced Kevin Wendell Crumb and his 23 unique personalities. In Glass, these three extraordinary individuals are thrown together, their fates intertwined as Crumb and Dunn become pawns in the game of Mr. Glass. You won’t see buildings collapse or crowds of people running away in fear. Instead, Shyamalan plays around the gray area between humanity and superpower — and delusion. Both the characters and the audience are teased with ambiguity about the powers of these individuals. You might find yourself pondering whether it’s their unusual skills or their moral convictions that make them heroes or villains, but it’s not a question the film shows much interest in.I can’t say much without spoilers, but Glass will keep you guessing. While promising superhistrionics, it takes our three heroes to a secure ward where they’re treated by Sarah Paulson’s psychiatrist. It would be easier to buy into the psychological battle of wits that follows if the psych hospital was even vaguely realistic. The eye-rollingly lax security undermines the tension of the story.GlassEnlarge ImageSamuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy and Bruce Willis in Glass.  Universal Pictures/Jessica Kourkounis Jackson and Willis don’t have much to do, so it’s a testament to their sheer presence that they still hold the attention every time they’re on screen. But McAvoy almost runs away with the movie as he cycles between funny and scary and sympathetic personalities each second. One thing other superhero movies can learn from Glass is that you don’t need wall-to-wall CG to create compelling comic characters. It’s stunning to see McAvoy transform from nervy child to incredible hulking psychopath with just a roll of his formidable trapezoids, putting CG-enhanced characters to shame. Meanwhile, Shyamalan plays with the format and familiarity of superhero movies while throwing in a few of his signature swerves. The fights, in particular, are artfully shot, although you might expect more of them. That’s the dangerous game Shyamalan plays in Glass: you can only tease audiences with promises of superhero action if you deliver something even more interesting. And Glass doesn’t always succeed. The climax feels drawn out and short on stakes, especially as the secondary characters are just sort of there. It’s nice to see Anya Taylor-Joy return from Split, and there’s a genuine charge in seeing the now fully grown Spencer Treat Clark alongside footage of him as a vulnerable child in Unbreakable. But these characters aren’t very active in driving the slight story along. The ending is frustrating — I felt as if a huge rock was pressing down on my chest when the credits rolled. However, it also triggered my imagination on what may happen if there’s a next film, and I started guessing again. I have a strong feeling this may become a universe of its own, but vastly different from Marvel and DC stories. Shyamalan’s characters hit close to home — they’re not born of lab accidents, alien planets or advanced technology, they become who they are because of pain and hardship. If there’s anything superhuman about them, it’s their fight against their own flaws. I promised a spoiler-free review, so I’ll leave everything to your imagination. But before you close this window, let me ask you a philosophical question: Would you prefer a world with superhumans or the world we have right now?  Movie reviewslast_img read more

Baylor Hires 1st Female President Amid Sex Assault Scandal

first_imgAP Photo/LM Otero, FileFILE – In this Dec. 5, 2015, file photo, Baylor helmets on shown the field after an NCAA college football game in Waco, Texas. Baylor University will look to rebuild its reputation and perhaps its football program after an outside review found administrators mishandled allegations of sexual assault and the team operated under the perception it was above the rules.Baylor University selected a new president to guide the nation’s largest Baptist school on Tuesday, picking the first female leader in its 172-year history as the campus wades through a sexual assault scandal that chased out her predecessor and led to several lawsuits and investigations.Linda Livingstone comes to Baylor from George Washington University, where she is a dean and professor of management. Her academic career includes previous administrative and teaching roles at Pepperdine University and Baylor.Livingstone returns to Baylor at a time the school faces federal lawsuits from more than a dozen women who contend that school officials ignored or suppressed their sexual assault claims and fostered a culture of rape within the football program. The school also faces a state criminal investigation and civil rights probe by federal education officials.A Baylor investigation report in 2016 found the school mishandled sexual assault claims for years and the football program operated as if it was above the rules. Football coach Art Briles was fired and former President Ken Starr was demoted and later resigned. David Garland had been acting as interim president. In a statement released by Baylor, Livingstone said she is “humbled and honored” to come back and said the 16,000-student school is “committed to excellence in all aspects of University life, while strengthening the Christian mission.”Baylor has also has been criticized by state lawmakers and wealthy alumni as being too secretive in how the school conducted its investigation and selectively releasing details of what it found.Baylor initially released a 13-page “Finding of Facts” summary that found “institutional failure at every level,” but it didn’t include details of this failure. Months later, Baylor officials acknowledged that 17 women had reported being sexually assaulted by 19 football players. In one of the lawsuits against the school, a woman who alleges that she was raped by two football players in 2013 said she knows of more than 50 sexual assaults by 31 players over a four-year period. The university and the law firm that conducted the internal review, Pepper Hamilton, are fighting subpoenas seeking the firm’s investigation records. As a private school, most of Baylor’s records and its top-level meetings are exempt from the state’s public information laws.
