Chandigarh on Monday (Express photo by Kamleshwar Singh) Related News A last-minute decision by the Medical Council of India to roll back the number of MBBS seats at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 from 100 to 50 sparked off protests by parents and candidates during the counselling on Monday Upset parents and candidates surrounded the counsellors and raised anti-college slogans bringing the proceedings to a halt For many hours disorder prevailed in the counselling hall The parents said that the rollback meant that many candidates would not only not get admission in GMCH but they had also missed the chance to apply in other colleges where counselling was scheduled for Monday CMC in Ludhiana was one such college they said In the afternoon college director Dr Atul Sachdev met parents and told them that the MCI had informed them about the rollback only in the morning It was after this that the counselling resumed The college has scheduled a second round of counselling for July 18 Dr Sachdev said some of the reasons which led to the MCI decision were “less number of lockers the small size of lecture theatres with a capacity of 80 seats instead of 100 shortage of space in the anatomy laboratories and common demonstration rooms of a few laboratories’’ Terming these “petty issues’’ Dr Sachdev said “We have enough number of faculty members we have state-of-the-art education facilities We will pursue the matter with the council as it involves the future of several students” The MCI had increased the number of seats in the college to 100 for one year last year But its prospectus gave an impression that the number of seats was again going to be 100 this year It read “As per notification of MCI dated July 31 2013 the number of MBBS seats at GMCH was increased to 100 for the year 2013 Tentative number of MBBS seats for the admission year 2014 is likely to remain 100 subject to any further direction or order from the MCI or the Central Government” The parents and candidates alleged that the college had misled them and some of them threatened to drag it to court Kurrun Singh Sekhon from the USA who was at number five on the merit list for the NRI quota was very sure about his admission as according to the prospectus there were six seats for NRIs But after the rollback the number of NRI seats is reduced to three So Sekhon now can’t get admission Similarly S Aggarwal whose state rank was 54 now can’t get admission Her mother Anju said “We were so confident about our daughter’s admission in GMCH-32 that we did not go to four other medical colleges including CMC Ludhiana and Kasturba Medical College Manipal’’ For all the latest Chandigarh News download Indian Express App More Related NewsWritten by Aamir Khan | Mumbai | Friday said it “shuddered to think what would happen to common man” if the country’s premier probe agency the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had made no efforts to procure evidence from the NRI industrialist himself Earlier Wadia had submitted an application with the sessions court which is trying the case alleging a “larger conspiracy” to eliminate him because of corporate rivalry and offering to depose himself With the sessions court agreeing to allow Wadia to depose Kirti Ambani a senior executive of Reliance Industries who is an accused in the case moved the HC urging it to restrain Wadia from deposing before the trial court Hearing Ambani’s plea Justice Revati Mohite Dere of the HC said the onus of examining the “best witness” and “proving the case beyond reasonable doubt” was on the CBI “When you had the best witness ready to depose you made no efforts to record his deposition” Justice Dere said while criticising the probe agency On July 3 the CBI’s lawyer had told the HC that Wadia’s lawyer had claimed before the trial court that it was her responsibility to bring her client for the deposition after which the agency did not take any steps in the matter Justice Dere then asked the CBI to file an affidavit and clarify its stand on July 4 On July 4 (Friday) when special public prosecutor appeared in the HC for the CBI Justice Dere said “There is no answer forthcoming (from CBI) with regards to efforts taken In a prosecution case who has to prove charges Is it the responsibility of the complainant’s advocate” Justice Dere said Senior counsel Mahesh Jethmalani who appeared for Wadia said the CBI was not only a “caged parrot” but a “suspicious one” “Mr Wadia was present (in India) between November and December But immediately after he left another witness was examined” he argued Questioning the investigating agency’s “conduct” he contended that another accused in the case Leo Sequeira had made an application with his confessional statement “It is not with the CBI Something is going terribly wrong The CBI took 13 years to file the chargesheet” said the senior lawyer Senior counsel Amit Desai who appeared for Ambani challenged Wadia’s plea “Recording of statements now can lead to alteration of charge rebuttal of evidence and consequently a re-trial in an already prolonged case” he contended Desai said that Wadia being the victim should have participated in the prosecution’s proceedings Justice Dere said it was “baffling” that the CBI could not record deposition through other methods like Skype The next hearing on the participating in the new home and away league will be chosen based on a clearly defined set of qualification criteria (Source: PTI) Related News The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Mondayannounced a new annual global home and away league to be launched in 2019 involving the world’s leading hockey nations which will replace Hockey World League (HWL) Semi-Finals and Finals and the Champions Trophy FIH also decided that Champions Trophy held once in two years since 1978 will be scrapped and the 2018 edition in Amsterdam will be the last tournament “Designed to provide a regular calendar of must-see events played in packed stadia across the world throughout the year a new annual global home and away league involving the world’s leading hockey nations will complement the Hockey World Cup and Olympic Games tournaments” FIH said in a statement “This system will see international teams play against opponents once at home and once away each year in this league Following several months of competition the top ranked teams will then qualify for a stand-alone grand finale tournament which will determine the winners of the competition This will form part of a three tier system identical for both the men’s and women’s game” it added Teams participating in the new home and away league will be chosen based on a clearly defined set of qualification criteria designed to maintain the quality of the league and high standard events “These have been developed around the three main objectives of the new event portfolio — to generate a massive change in TV and media coverage for hockey; create big bold packed and loud events and make a step change to increase future revenues” FIH stated For those nations not in the home and away league the next tier of competition will remain similar to the current Hockey World League Round 1 and 2 events played over two year cycles This format will still gives teams the chance to go all the way to the World Cup or Olympics Even the smallest hockey-playing nations have the opportunity to write their own chapter in hockey’s history books as they progress throughout the rounds of competition into these flagship events While Hockey World Cup qualification will remain similar to the current system Olympic qualification will change pending approval of the International Olympic Committee’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification criteria These proposals were approved by the FIH Executive Board in Lausanne Switzerland earlier this month The decision was made after more than 18 months of consultation research and development between a number of stakeholders overseen by a specially formed working group for this project “This is a historic decision for the sport of hockey a game changer More than a year’s worth of work and over 700 people have helped develop this new portfolio of events Moving from a tournament based format to a home and away league will considerably increase the value of our sport” said FIH CEO Kelly Fairweather “Fans will be exposed to more international hockey throughout the year with many more home matches for them to enjoy This along with tweaks to the tiers below will have a significant impact on the sport across all levels safeguarding its future for many years to come” he added FIH President Leandro Negre said the changes were made with an aim of making hockey a global game “When we launched our strategy 18 months ago we knew that drastic measures were required to revolutionise the sport This is an exciting opportunity for hockey A lot of hard work has already been undertaken but this is only the start “We need the hockey family to embrace this change now to ensure we reach our 10-year aim of making hockey a global game that inspires the next generation This will certainly be a monumental step for the sport as we take it to the next level” said Negre For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Related News 2014 5:50 pm
